Binding: Nineteenth-century blind-tooled russia. On the gold-tooled spine the crest of Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 1st Duke of Buckingham, KG (a garb or handed azure, within the Garter, surmounted by a ducal coronet). Grey pastedowns, the edges blind-tooled; gilt-edged leaves. Size: 210 × 143 × 18 mm. Size of leaf: 203 × 132 mm. A few notes in a contemporary hand on [a1r], naming the author, work, and translator, and supplying corrections to some of the running headings in item 1. Gathering signatures supplied possibly in the same hand. A sixteenth-century(?) continental hand (see T‑080(1)) has supplied the folio numbers 147-166 for item 1, 71-126 for item 2, and 127-146 for item 3. This numbering, together with the numbers ‘6', ‘4', ‘5' in a slightly later hand on the recto of the first leaves of each item, shows that they were originally bound in the order T‑080(1), T‑079(1), Probus, and were preceded by three other items. Some higher page numbers, following the same ordering, added in the same slightly later hand. Provenance: Before the end of the sixteenth century bound with three preceding items; see manuscript notes. John Bridges (1666-1724); purchased in 1702/3; note in his hand on the verso of the front endleaf: ‘1703 - 1 M 1/14'; Bibliothecae Bridgesianae catalogus (7 Feb. 1725/6), lot 1414, naming all three authors from items 1-3, marked down for £0. 7. 0. Jeremaiah Markland (1693-1776); see ‘Jer. Markland' on a1r of item 1. Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1776-1839); see sale (7 Feb. 1849), lot 5401, containing items 1-3, bound in the present russia binding; ‘5401' in black ink on paper label at the tail of the spine. B.; bound by Roger de Coverly and Sons. Size: 203 × 139 × 7 mm. Size of leaf: 198 × 131 mm. At the tail of [c6v] in a contemporary Italian hand: ‘Nullus est enim qui nihil peccet, et multa sunt quae ad peccandum irritent . . . premium Lactantj [Lactantius, De ira Dei, 20.4]'. Folio numbers are supplied in pencil. Initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red ink. Provenance: Giacomo Morgante (fl. 1906); cut-out description on the front pastedown, from Morgante, Catalogue (1906), no. 463, sold for 27.50 Lire. Ingram Bywater (1840-1914); Elenchus, no. 3291.
