Binding: Sixteenth-century English blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, possibly Oxford, ‘Binder M' (Oldham, Blind-stamped Bindings, 23, n. 3), two catches and clasps lost; rebacked. On both covers fillets form concentric frames: between the second and third set of these is a repeated floral stamp (Oldham, Blind-stamped Bindings, pl. xxvii, no. 423); between the fourth and fifth and in the inner rectangle is a repeated lozenge-shaped floral stamp. Size: 302 × 222 × 50 mm. Size of leaf: 293 × 204 mm. Marginal notes and underlining in text in a number of fifteenth- to seventeenth-century hands; one early hand extracts names and key words; another makes short summaries. Pen-trials and scribbles on a1r. Provenance: John Foote (b. c.1565–after 1602/3). John Bancroft (1574-1640), Bishop of Oxford; inscription on [con]8v: ‘Jo. Bancrofte ex dono Magistri Foote tutoris eius'. Francis Dodington (b. c.1604); inscription on a1r: ‘Franciscus Dodingtonus me tenet teste Thomas Hammonde multisque aliis in hac schola'.
